Leeza Hernandez has worked in the publishing industry as an art director, designer and illustrator for more than 17 years between the UK and USA. Her diverse background included newspaper, magazine and book design, and freelance illustration, with the occasional spot of writing and photography.

 

Today, her life is fulfilled through her family and children’s book writing and illustration. "Bored Bella Learns About Fiction and Non Fiction" (Picture Window Books, 2010) was Leeza's first illustrated trade book. She is currently working on "Eat Your Math Homework," (Charlesbridge, 2011) an illustrated non-fiction title and her debut picture book: "Dog Gone!" (G.P. Putnam's Sons, 2012).

As an active member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators), she is the Illustrator Coordinator for the New Jersey chapter and designs the chapter's quarterly magazine "Sprouts." Leeza loves to meet people from all backgrounds—especially those who are enthusiastic about creativity and children's books.

 

She describes her work as a contemporary fusion of traditional and digital media which gives her work a modern, yet organic look with an emphasis on texture, color and line. Leeza was the recipient of the Tomie de Paola Portfolio Award at the 2009 SCBWI Annual Winter Conference in NYC.
